Curious islanders are invited to join the celebrated playwright, Oscar Wilde, on a guided tour in his former footsteps in Ryde.
What: In this promenade performance, Wilde returns to Ryde. In 1884, he delivered a lecture ‘On Dress’ at Ryde Town Hall. Famous and infamous in equal measure, Wilde drew crowds who came to be entertained but stayed to be informed. 142 years on, Wilde will take you on a tour of Union Street, starting at Ryde Town Hall and meandering down to the Esplanade, to end at Appley Tower.
Who: Whether you are familiar with Wilde or not, this walk is for you. Whisper headsets are provided so you won’t miss a word as we walk.
Why?: Much of what Wilde had to say still speaks to us today. Come to learn about his life and lecture, and be engaged by the immersive performance in the fresh air.
