Birdsong has inspired generations of musicians, from the elegance of Vivaldi’s Goldfinch Concerto to Beyoncé’s cover of Blackbird. Now, a new music competition invites today’s amateur musicians to join that tradition.

The Lark Music-Making Competition, open to anyone aged over 18, encourages solo performers to submit music inspired by birds – in title, theme or mood.

Open to all styles and abilities
Musicians of any genre, instrument or skill level can enter. They may perform an existing piece or share an original composition, as long as it is their own solo performance.

Three age categories – 18–24, 25–39, and 40+ – each offer a £1,000 prize. Winners might use it to upgrade equipment, buy an instrument, or simply make more time for their passion.

Supporting musical journeys
All finalists will receive a free subscription to Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s 2025/26 Digital Concert series (valued at £170). The series includes 19 concerts streamed live and available online for 30 days, offering inspiration and insight into professional performance.

The judging panel includes musicians and broadcasters who are looking for expression, creativity and originality – not technical perfection. Smartphone recordings are welcome.

A respected panel of judges
Judges include BBC Radio 3 broadcaster Tom Service; Bond’s Tania Davis; producer Chris Caton; and Lark Music’s Brian Hillstead and Gordana Jevic. They are joined by BSO’s Jesper Svedberg, Enyi Okpara and Lucy Warren.

Lucy Warren, BSO’s Joint Head of Participate, said,

“We can’t wait to hear what you’ll do with this brief — the creative possibilities around birds and birdsong are endless.”

Backed by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Lark Music
The competition is a partnership between Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Lark Music Insurance. BSO runs community music programmes across the South West, including inclusive projects like Symphony from Scratch and the BSO Young Associate scheme.

BSO Chief Executive, Dougie Scarfe OBE, said,

“This competition is our way of shining a spotlight on that remarkable passion and talent.”

Lark Music’s Brian Hillstead added,

“Whether you’re playing for discovery, connection, or joy — this is your moment to be heard and celebrated.”

How to enter
Entries must be submitted by 11.59pm on Wednesday 25th June.
