Isle of Wight artists are being invited to apply for a new project that will see a court cell at the Isle of Wight Courts transformed through a youth-led mural initiative.

The project, funded by #BeeWell and coordinated by Artswork, will bring together children supported by the Youth Justice Service (YJS) and a professional artist to design and paint a mural.

The aim is to make the space less intimidating for children, aligning with Child First principles.

Building on a proven model
This follows the success of a similar initiative at Newport Police Station, where a mural was recently completed on the ceiling of a cell used for holding children.

That project showed how creative involvement can offer children a sense of ownership and achievement, while also improving the environment for others who may find themselves in the same situation.

Supporting rehabilitation and reducing reoffending
The courts project seeks to support the Youth Justice Service’s wider efforts to reduce reoffending. Children who take part will gain practical experience, develop new skills and have the opportunity to earn digital badge qualifications.

The process is also designed to improve employability and help participants feel a sense of pride by giving something back. At the same time, the new mural will contribute to making the cell a calmer and less hostile environment, especially for neurodivergent children.

This work ties into the overall objective of supporting rehabilitation and avoiding the criminalisation of vulnerable young people.

How to apply
Up to £3,500 is available for the project. Head over to the Artswork website to find out more and submit your application.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 24th June 2025.
