The Isle of Wight Biosphere will take its place on the world stage at an upcoming international gathering in China.

International coordinator, Sally Chaucer, will represent the Island at the fifth World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou.

A decade in the making
The congress brings together representatives from 748 biosphere reserves spanning 134 countries worldwide. Delegates will share research, experiences and projects that demonstrate the vital links between people and the natural environment.

This major event occurs only once every ten years and will help shape the future direction of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme.

Permanent showcase planned
A permanent exhibition will feature biospheres from around the globe, offering every reserve the opportunity to tell its unique story.

Organisers want to ensure the Isle of Wight secures its place in this prestigious exhibition.

Island objects sought
Islanders can now contribute to this global showcase by donating objects that represent the Island’s biosphere.

The organisers seek lightweight traditional crafts, cultural artefacts, or locally created handmade items.

These objects will help demonstrate the connection between people and nature on the Island.

Time running short
Residents who wish to contribute can contact organisers by emailing hello@iwbiosphere.org.

Contributors must deliver items by 14th September, and all objects must be lightweight enough to travel in a suitcase.

Global recognition
This congress represents a chance for the Isle of Wight to feature in a global collection that highlights the value of communities living in harmony with nature.

Organisers describe the opportunity as a way to show the world what makes the Island unique as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The UNESCO website provides additional information about the Congress for those seeking further details.
