Isle of Wight-based creative arts company, Deadman, is set to explore the story of Damien Nettles, a teenager who disappeared nearly thirty years ago, in a new research and development project.
The project is supported by public funding from Arts Council England. Deadman continues its tradition of creating innovative pathways for new onstage and backstage talent.
New opportunities for Island-based creatives
As part of this initiative, Deadman is launching a creative arts apprenticeship and hosting an open casting call for performers. The company is specifically looking for individuals based on the Isle of Wight to participate.
Deadman’s recent production, The Freshwater Five, toured both coastal and nationwide venues, selling out shows from Newport to Kent. The production received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike.
For the Damien Nettles project, Deadman will again collaborate with Southampton-based MAST Mayflower Studios, a partnership that has proven successful in the past.
A story with deep local roots
Samuel Bossman, Artistic Director of Deadman, spoke about the importance of this new project. He described the Damien Nettles story as a “mythic Island story” that has become an integral part of the community’s modern folklore.
He said,
“Like Freshwater Five, this story is not just implicitly important because it is live and has real-world implications for people still suffering.”
Samuel emphasised that the project would bring to light the darker aspects of the Isle of Wight’s history, aspects often overlooked by visitors and locals alike.
Collaboration with the Nettles Family
Deadman is working closely with Damien Nettles’ mother, Valerie, and the rest of the family as they develop this project.
Samuel added,
“We are very grateful to Damien’s mother, Valerie, and the family, our venue and funding partners, as we begin work on this story.”
He expressed excitement about bringing this story to the Isle of Wight community, highlighting the importance of engaging with local audiences and talent.
Open auditions and opportunities ahead
Deadman is keen to involve Island-based creatives throughout the Damien Nettles project. Open auditions for performers are scheduled for Friday, 13th September. Those interested are encouraged to express their interest online or via email at info@hellodeadman.com.
