Building the Bay, the community-led initiative driving regeneration across Sandown, Lake, and Shanklin, has launched Bay Visions: Outdoor Mural Commissions.

The new programme will award nine grants of £1,000 each to support the creation of large-scale painted murals across the Bay Area.

Bringing colour and creativity to public spaces
The commissions will be evenly distributed across Sandown/Yaverland, Lake and Shanklin. Each mural aims to bring bold, colourful and inspiring artwork to public spaces where local people live, work and spend time.

Artists are encouraged to design murals that reflect the Bay’s past, present and future, with themes of inclusion, diversity, and environmental awareness at their heart.

The finished works will stand as permanent reminders of the Bay’s identity and ambition, while sparking conversation, connection, and pride among residents.

“We want murals that speak to who we are”
Paul Wilson, Arts and Culture representative for Building the Bay, said,

“This is about giving new and unheard voices the chance to transform the look and feel of our towns.

“We want murals that speak to who we are as a community, celebrate our unique heritage, and imagine the future we want to build together.”

Applications now open
Applications are open to established artists, as well as new, and emerging artists from across the Bay Area. Creators may apply for more than one commission, allowing them to explore multiple ideas or styles.

Funded by Sandown, Lake and Shanklin Councils, the initiative forms part of the Bay Area Place Plan launched in January 2024, which aims to unite the three towns through culture, community and regeneration.

Application details
The deadline to apply is 1st December 2025.

The Grant value is £1,000 per mural commission, with nine commissions available.
