Department

This Way Up is a month-long, youth-led takeover of the newly launched Department in Ryde, forming the venue’s full Autumn 2026 programme. The project places young people at the heart of decision-making, giving them genuine curatorial control over performances, events, workshops, classes and exhibition spaces. Acting as curators, producers and programmers, participants collaboratively shape the creative direction of the building for the entire month, developing a programme that reflects their interests, concerns and artistic ambitions.

Working with a blank canvas, young people are encouraged to experiment across live music, theatre, talks, digital work and visual arts. Alongside this, they receive mentoring and practical support from Department staff and visiting professionals, building skills, confidence and experience in cultural programming.
