‘Folktastic Island’ is a two-year New Carnival project exploring the Isle of Wight’s folk heritage through seasons, traditions, myths, legends and place-based stories. Working with Isle of Wight College students, schools, local families, writers and artists, engaging young people in researching Island Folklore and reimagining it through creative practice. Linking heritage with contemporary themes such as the biosphere, climate change and equality.
‘Folk’ is interpreted as ‘the art of the people’ and as such dives into Isle of Wight identity past and future. Activity includes the creation of a new performance piece, with large costumes, college students and young artists, which will tour community locations including the West Wight, Sandown and Newport supported by workshops for families and a pop up exhibition.
