New Carnival

Present: Island Folk

Island Folk is a New Carnival project exploring the Isle of Wight’s folk heritage through its seasons, traditions, myths, legends and local stories. Working with Isle of Wight College students, schools, families, writers and artists, the project invites young people to research Island folklore and reimagine it through creative practice, connecting heritage with themes like the biosphere, climate change and equality.

Here, folk is understood as “the art of the people”, exploring what Isle of Wight identity means both in the past and today. The project will create a new performance piece featuring large costumes, college students and young artists, touring community locations including the West Wight, Sandown and Newport. Alongside the performances, there will be family workshops and a pop-up exhibition.
