Teachers across the Isle of Wight are being invited to discover how their schools can play an active role in restoring the Island’s natural environment.

A free online event, the Island Nature Online Webinar for Schools, will take place on Tuesday 4th November 2025 from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

To register for this Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session, educators can email claire@thecommonspace.org.uk.

Bringing nature into learning
The session will explore how schools can use the Isle of Wight’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) to enhance their curriculums, inspire new skills and careers and encourage lifelong learning for both teachers and pupils.

It will also highlight how schools can use their own grounds to make a positive difference for wildlife and biodiversity.

Background to the strategy
The Isle of Wight LNRS was launched in May 2025 after two years of research, consultation and collaboration between local authorities, landowners, environmental groups and communities. Thousands of Islanders contributed ideas and local knowledge.

The strategy sets out specific actions to protect and restore the Island’s threatened species and habitats. With 15,000 species recorded on the Island – around 20 per cent of the UK total – and 14 species already lost since 2000, the need for action has never been clearer.

A roadmap for the future
The LNRS provides a framework for coordinated local action to reverse biodiversity decline.

By linking education and conservation, the upcoming webinar aims to ensure that young Islanders not only learn about nature recovery – they become part of it.
