Gurnard May Day Celebration

What a brilliant day at the Gurnard May Day Celebration.

It was wonderful to see families, neighbours and friends coming together to enjoy such a creative and welcoming community event. From arts and crafts, willow weaving and lino printing to seed planting, bug hotels, rope making and fantastic local stalls, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, and to all the volunteers, makers, local businesses and helpers who made the day possible. The lovely comments, photos and messages shared afterwards have meant so much.

One of the most special moments of the day was the return of the Gurnard maypole.

Just a few weeks before the event, neighbours near Old School Meadow were asked if anyone knew what had happened to the village’s old maypole. Amazingly, it turned out local residents had saved it when the old school was demolished many years ago.

With a little CAN YOU HEAR US? funding and a lot of community goodwill, the historic pole was restored and remounted and for the first time since the 1980s, maypole dancing returned to Gurnard.

A beautiful reminder of what can happen when community, creativity and local history come together.
