Plans for a new major film studio, Medina Film Studios, on the Isle of Wight are making significant progress, with a planning application now open for public consultation.

Since the initial announcement of the film studio plans in November 2022, there has been little news. However, the public consultation has rekindled excitement about the potential impact of this development.

Detailed studio plans
The proposed development includes the creation of film and TV studios with four sound stages, two workshops, and various production support facilities. According to the supporting statement for the application, the studio will occupy 6.5 hectares of riverfront property.

“Medina Film Studios will be the Island’s first screen-based media hub,” the statement reads. “This digitally advanced, futureproofed studio will enable productions to base themselves on the Island and leverage its stunning locations.”

The studio will be located near one of the Island’s major ports, alongside the Medina River, and will feature the latest in camera workflow technology and cyber security.

Economic and cultural benefits
The plans highlight significant economic and cultural benefits for the Isle of Wight. The project aims to provide an alternative form of employment, bringing widespread advantages to the local community.

“Medina Studios will unlock a treasure trove of cinematic potential,” the statement adds. “It will not only serve as weather cover to support production schedules, but also utilise a variety of unused local locations for diverse content.”

Job creation and economic impact
The planning application outlines the job creation potential of the Medina Film Studios project. It is estimated that around 400 direct full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs will be generated in the film and production sector.

Additionally, the construction phase of the development is expected to create up to 150 direct and indirect jobs over two phases. The wider economic impact includes substantial supply chain benefits, with approximately 250 FTE indirect jobs anticipated.

These jobs will span a range of industries, from local shops and restaurants to specialist services such as costume design and make-up artistry.

Community involvement
The public consultation period allows residents and stakeholders to review the detailed plans and provide feedback. This is a critical step in ensuring the development meets the needs and expectations of the local community.

Medina Film Studios promise not only to elevate the Island’s cultural profile, but also to bring lasting economic benefits. It’s a win win situation for everyone involved.
