Last week, the latest chapter in Ryde’s Department was unveiled with the launch of Packs’ People, an oral history project that brings to life the memories of those who worked and shopped at the iconic Isle of Wight department store.

Packs, once situated at the top of Union Street and later on Cross Street, stood as a beacon of style and commerce during the golden age of department stores.

This era, now part of history, left a profound impact on Islanders, making it vital to preserve these cherished memories.

A collaborative effort to preserve history
To achieve this, the creative technologists at Meeja were commissioned to capture these stories and build a dedicated website, ensuring they remain accessible to all for years to come.

The project includes hours of full-length interviews, alongside more than 150 snippets from those involved. These short clips provide intimate insights into life at Packs, touching on themes such as working in the store, the legendary fashion shows, the bustling bridal department and the much-loved Coffee Bean café.

Additionally, a stunning collection of over 200 photographs, many never before seen by the public, showcases the store’s history. Former staff, family members, Zoe Barker and the Historic Ryde Society generously contributed these images, which include portraits taken by renowned Isle of Wight photographer Julian Winslow.

“A real Isle of Wight effort”
Simon Perry from Meeja expressed pride in the project, saying,

“We’re tremendously proud to have been entrusted to capture the memories from this cherished Isle of Wight institution.

“It’s been great working with the whole team – a real Isle of Wight effort.

“We’re sure many Islanders will find something of interest to them and their families and friends.”

Visitors to the Packs’ People website can listen to interviews or explore the snippets, which cover a wide range of topics. The photographs and audio clips serve as a vibrant reminder of an era that still holds a special place in the hearts of many Islanders.

Department Ryde: A cultural transformation
While Packs’ People preserves the past, Ryde’s Department is focused on the future. Officially opening in mid-March 2025, this new cultural centre aims to enrich the Isle of Wight’s creative life with programmes beginning from 14th February.

With the motto “Art at its Heart,” Department will offer a theatre space, workshops, rehearsal areas, a gallery, and a café/bar named ‘The Office’. Local arts organisations such as Stitch Department, Horse Box Theatre and Ryde Arts are integrated into its plans, alongside Shademakers UK.

Supported by Arts Council England, Historic England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the Ryde High Street Action Zone, Department Ryde is part of the Phase 2 DCMS Cultural Development Fund initiative. It promises to nurture the next generation of creative talent while providing exceptional opportunities for the local community to engage with theatre, visual arts, digital media and carnival activities.

A legacy for the Island
The collaboration between Packs’ People and Department Ryde encapsulates a journey from preserving the Isle of Wight’s rich history to fostering its creative future.

Through shared memories and new opportunities, this initiative ensures that the spirit of community and creativity remains alive for generations to come.
