We’re pleased to announce that Sarah Chatwin has recently been appointed as a trustee of Creative Island. Sarah, a seasoned Chartered Surveyor and principal business leader, brings with her a commitment to strategic investment in the Island’s arts, culture, and heritage.
Sarah says,
“I am delighted to be able to support and advocate the strategic investment in The Arts, culture, and heritage on the Island through my trusteeship.”
Her passion for the Isle of Wight’s cultural landscape aligns well with Creative Island’s mission to foster artistic growth and opportunities across the region.
A career rooted on the Isle of Wight
Sarah has a longstanding connection to the Island, dating back to her education at Medina High School. Since leaving sixth form in the late 1980s, she has developed a strong professional foundation in the built environment, both on the Isle of Wight and throughout the South of the UK.
Her background as a Chartered Surveyor, combined with her experience as a business principal, positions her to bring practical insights to her new role. Sarah has consistently emphasised her dedication to balancing a career in the built environment with her passion for sports and the arts.
Creating spaces for community and culture
For Sarah, the arts are not only an expression, but an opportunity to help communities thrive. She believes that art and culture have the potential to transform spaces and create inclusive environments that benefit residents and visitors alike.
“I have a particular interest in making places work for people,” she explains, highlighting her view that creative placemaking can enrich lives and foster community spirit on the Isle of Wight. Her vision aligns with Creative Island’s objectives to build a sustainable cultural infrastructure that supports both artists and local communities.
Passion for diverse art forms and new perspectives
Sarah brings a wide-ranging interest in art forms, from urban and street art to the burgeoning world of the metaverse. Living in West Wight, she has also developed a particular interest in biophilic design and entropathic sculpture, artistic approaches that harmonise with the natural environment.
Describing her approach as ‘rangy,’ Sarah embraces a variety of styles, from brutalism to digital art, reflecting her desire to keep her interests as varied as the art forms Creative Island seeks to support.
A vision for strategic growth in arts investment
As a trustee, Sarah’s focus on strategic growth and investment in arts and heritage on the Isle of Wight is likely to support the agency’s goal of creating a vibrant cultural scene. Her commitment to sustainable development, coupled with her unique professional background, will strengthen Creative Island’s ability to advocate for arts initiatives that benefit the Island’s cultural economy.
With her broad perspective and deep-rooted commitment to the Island, Sarah’s trusteeship promises to be a dynamic addition to Creative Island’s leadership.
